Lee Flames Basketball vs Tennessee Temple

Temple Defeats Lee in 2 Overtimes

Tuesday, November 03, 2009

Three summers ago a young player named Johnny McLawhorn was enrolled at Lee, according to Lee men’s basketball coach Tommy Brown. For unknown reasons things didn’t work out for the athlete. You might say he returned to haunt the Flames on Monday evening in Walker Arena.
All McLawhorn did was score 43 points (19-of-30 from the field, 4-of-7 from behind the arc and grab seven rebounds) in leading visiting Tennessee Temple to a stunning double-overtime 114-109 win and spoil Lee’s 2009-10 hoop opener.

“We didn’t have an answer for him,” said a deeply disappointed Brown. “This is the worst defense I’ve ever had a team play for me. I’m not taking anything away from Temple. I think it was just a case of them wanting it a little bit more than we did. I want to apologize to our fans. We had a great crowd, but I didn’t have our team well enough prepared to get a victory.”
The contest had as many twists and turns as a mountain road. The Flames got out to an early advantage and led by as much as nine points at the midway point of the first half. The Crusaders refused to fold and trailed by only three, 45-42 at the break.

Temple came out on fire in the opening minutes of the second half and the two long-time rivals exchanged leads several times before the Crusaders went up by four, 91-87 with only 22 seconds remaining in regulation. However, senior Josh Nofflet, who had a career-high 33 points and a team-leading 13 rebounds, tallied four quick points to send the thriller into OT tied at 91.
“I kept waiting for them (Temple) to wear down,” stressed Brown. “McLawhorn played a ton of minutes (44), and they just kept coming. We had to have someone step up and stop him and I tried several. In this same situation last year, we would have gone to Paco (Diaw), but we don’t have a Paco this year – not yet, anyway.”

The Crusaders went up again 100-97 with time clicking down in the first overtime. It was Jerel Blocker’s time to come to Lee’s rescue. He knocked down a field goal and hit one of two free throws to tie the game at 100. Blocker finished with 23 points and five boards in his first game as a Flame.

Temple gained the upper hand in the second OT 110-107 on a huge trey by McLawhorn. The Flames cut the margin to 110-109 on two freebies by Blocker. In fact, Lee had one shot at taking the lead in the final minute, but a forced shot and a rebound by the Crusaders helped spell defeat.

The pressure was squared on Temple’s Jarrett Smith after he was fouled with only six seconds remaining. Smith, who had made only 1-of-7 in earlier attempts, canned both charity tosses to seal the victory. It will take Brown and his troops a few hours to get over the stunning loss, but battles with Carver College (Thursday) and Bluefield (Saturday) face the Flames before the week ends.

The statistics show It was a Lee-Temple deluxe war that featured plenty of good and some bad. Temple shot 51 percent from the field and made 11-of-20 3-pointers. However, the Crusader made 31 trips to the free-throw line and converted just 13. The visitors turned the ball over 18 times against Lee pressure.

The Flames finished with a 46 percent field goal percentage, but that’s where most of the good stops for Brown’s club on offense. Lee made just 3-of-19 shots from behind the arc and went to the charity stripe 50 times, making just 28 (56 percent). The Flames turned the basketball over 23 times. On a positive note, Nofflet and Larrques Cunningham paced Lee to a commanding 64-46 margin on the boards. The leaping Cunningham finished with 15 points (four dunks) and 10 rebounds. He almost had a triple double with eight blocked shots.

Desmond Blue was the other Flame in double-figure scoring with 11 markers. He added five boards. In fact, Lee outscored Temple 58-52 in points in the paint, 18-15 in second-chance points, and 39-17 in points off the bench. Tyler Cutter had eight assists and seven points. The Flames were hit with three technical fouls.

While McLawhorn proved to be unstopable, Smith stepped up with 18 points, and Uros Komadinoc totaled 17 and canned four key 3-point shots. He also led the Crusaders with seven rebounds. Ed Pellot-Rosa rounded out Temple’s double-figure scoring with 10.

Tuesday, October 27, 2009

Winning conference championships has become the norm for coach Andrea Hudson and her Lady Flames volleyball team. Lee wrapped up another SSAC title with a 3-0 victory over Southern Wesleyan University on Tuesday evening.

The 25-18, 25-13 and 27-25 triumph over the visiting Warriors improved the Lady Flames' record to 10-0 in conference play and 27-5 overall. With only SSAC matches with Brenau and Columbia College remaining and holding a three-match advantage over Shorter College, another title belongs to the Hudsons.

Still ranked 22nd in the latest NAIA national poll, Hudson used reserves freely during all three sets. Sophomore Christa Hutchison, junior Kayla Carlisle and senior Milica Krsmanovic stepped up to pace the Lady Flames in kills with seven. Carlisle had three blocks and Hutchison and Krsmanovic two each.

The athletic Jacky Toruno displayed her talents at the net with six blocks and six kills. Gretchen Higdon and Kelsey Leffew were present to dish off assists to the big three. Higdon was the leader with 20 and Leffew totaled 14. Higdon also registered three aces and nine digs. Sara Smith chipped in with 10 digs and Leffew dug up seven.

For the battling Warriors, Jordan Corn was best with nine kills and three blocks. Lane Wallace recorded six kills, while Emily Cothran came away with 22 assists. Cothran joined Katelyn Barnes as the dig leaders, each had nine.

The Lady Flames will complete regular-season SSAC play this weekend, traveling to face Brenau on Friday and moving on to Columbia, S.C. for a noon match on Saturday.

VB winning streak reaches 17

Tuesday, October 20, 2009

Coach Andrea Hudson will be the first to admit that Tuesday's 3-1 volleyball victory over visiting Trevecca Nazarene University was far from being one of her team's best, but it increased Lee's winning streak to 17 and sets up a key match with Emory University in Atlanta on Thursday.

The Lady Flames celebrated a return to the NAIA Top 25 ranking for the first time since September of 2007 by winning the first set by a convincing 25-9 margin. However, like they have on several occasions this season, Lee apparently lost its focus in the second set and was pinned with a 23-25 loss. Hudson rebounded her troops in style in the third set with a 25-17 decision, and the final set was also no contest as Lee won going away, 25-16.

The 24-4 Lady Flames, who have not lost since Sept 18, were led by Christa Hutchison. The sophomore outside hitter had 14 kills and an attack percentage of .444. She also added three blocks and five digs. Milica Krsmanovic had 12 kills in 22 attempts (.409). She served up two aces and pitched in with two blocks.

Sophomore outside hitter Stephanie Todd followed with nine kills, two aces, 16 digs and two blocks. Jacky Toruno made her presence felt with eight kills, five blocks and three digs. Gretchen Higdon set up her teammates with 22 assists and also joined in with 12 digs. Kelsey Leffew was next with 19 assists. Leffew joined Higdon with a double-figure night when she came up with 10 digs.

Trevecca had only one player with double-figure kills. Teegan Hunzlker slammed 10. She also kicked in with 13 digs. Haley White placed the Lady Trojans with 18 digs. Brooke Cannon added 15 assists and Halley Wiggins had 11.

Basketball Slam-Dunk Contest

Women's Soccer Runs Past B-P, 8-1

Saturday, October 10, 2009

Not even a wet playing surface on the Lee University soccer field could slow down the Lady Flames offense on Saturday afternoon.

Lee (9-2, 4-0) and ranked third by the NAIA, racked up an incredible 30 shots in the opening half, allowing just one to the Brewton-Parker Lady Barons (3-6, 1-5), though the Lady Flames did look sluggish at times. “I didn't think we played at the same level as we did earlier in the week,” coach Matt Yelton stated, “but it's a win and now we will start preparing for next Tuesday at Carson Newman.”

The first half started quickly for Lee, as Marina Lima converted a pass from Jamie Achten just 2:41 into the match to give the Lady Flames the 1-0 lead. For the next 30 minutes, however, Lady Barons’ keeper Mallory Lashley kept the Lady Flames at bay.

Lashley recorded 10 consecutive saves to keep the margin at 1-0, but with 32:01 remaining, the Lady Flames again found the back of the net. Jamie Achten took a feed from Kim Conrad and blasted a shot into the side-netting to give Lee a 2-0 lead.

Over the next nine minutes, the Lady Flames took control, scoring four more times. Christiane Christensen scoring two goals 18 seconds apart during that span to stretch the lead to 6-0 at the half. “I thought Linn [Christensen] and Chris[tiane] were both at their usual level of excellence, and that Jamie [Achten] played real well in her 45 minutes of action,” Yelton remarked.

Early in the second stanza, Lauren Good found Lima for her second goal of the match, making it 7-0 Lady Flames. With 16:06 remaining, Darcy Brannen spotted senior Kelli Lawson, who converted her first goal of the season, giving the Lady Flames their largest lead of the match at 8-0.

Just moments away from the finish, however, the Lady Flames were whistled for a foul inside the box, giving the Lady Barons a penalty kick. Kelsey Black converted to get Brewton-Parker on the board and provide the final margin of 8-1.

The Lady Flames out-shot the Lady Barons 44-2 in the match, and Lashley finished with 13 saves. Jamie Achten recorded five points (one goal, 3 assists) in the match, while Lima and Christensen each recorded two goals. “It was another good performance out of our midfield,” said Yelton, “and Darcy played very well in her first start of the year.”

The Lady Flames will play the first of four consecutive road matches on Tuesday, when they travel to Carson Newman College (11-0) for a 7 p.m. match.

Volleyball Takes Five-Set Thriller from Emory

Saturday, October 10, 2009
In a battle between Emory University, a NCAA Division III national champion and the always NAIA power Lee, the Lady Flames pulled away in the fifth set to claim a 3-2 thriller from the visitors.

The Eagles claimed the hard-fought first set 25-23. The determined Lady Flames came charging back in the second game and won 25-22. The Atlanta team moved on top 2-1 with a 25-20 decision in the third set, but Lee squared the match at 2-2 with an overwhelming win in the fourth set 25-13.

Coach Andrea Hudson's club continued to dominate the fifth set and posted their 11th straight victory and pushed their record to 19-4 overall with the 15-8 win.

"We always enjoy playing good teams like Emory," said coach Andrea Hudson after the emotional victory. "Overall, we played well and I'm proud of our girls. They love to play good teams and Emory has a solid team with a lot of weapons. It wouldn't surprise me if they win another national championship."

Hudson added that she was pleased with the way her girls fought after they dropped the third game. "We've been working hard to get better," she stressed, "and playing good teams is going to make our girls better."

Sophomore Stephanie Todd banged away at the net the entire evening and came away with 16 kills. She also had eight digs and two blocks. Todd scored back-to-back points in the fifth game to put the Lady Flames up 12-6.

Another sophomore, Christa Hutchison enjoyed one of her better nights since becoming a Lady Flame. She smashed 11 kills and had two service aces and six digs. Jacky Toruno stepped up in the final game and recorded a kill that ended the match. The junior finished with 10 kills and two aces. Kayla Carlisle was again strong at the net with nine kills and a team-leading six blocks.

Sara Smith put the Lady Flames in total command in the final set with a big ace. She totaled three for the night and again was all over the court with 28 digs. Gretchen Higdon registered 22 assists and 11 digs as Lee had three players in double-digit digs for the match. Kelsey Leffew followed closely behind with 18 assists and seven digs. All totaled, Lee had 60 kills in the big win, while the Eagles countered with 50.

Alysse Meyer displayed her power with 15 slams for the losers. Alex Duhl and Jessica McAlvany had nine kills apiece, while McAlvany also recorded four blocks and Duhl led her team in blocks with seven. Natalie Schonefeld helped keep the Eagles close all night with 43 assists. She was also tough at the net with five blocks.

The Lady Flames could face much tougher opposition next Friday and Saturday when they travel to Illinois for four matches in the Olivet Nazarene tournament.

Volleyball Coasts Past Covenant, 3-0

Saturday, October 10, 2009

Gorana Maric and Jacky Toruno Go High for Block

With Kayla Carlisle leading the way, the Lee University Lady Flames scored their 10th straight victory on Saturday afternoon by defeating visiting Covenant College, 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-13).
Carlisle was sharp at the net with nine kills in 12 attempts for a .750 attack percentage. The junior also registered six timely blocks as the Lady Flames improved to 18-4 on the year and face a much stiffer challenge later on Saturday evening.

Milica Krsmanovic turned in her usual solid performance with eight slams, four aces and a pair of blocks. In fact, she served out the second set win for the Lady Flames. Stephanie Todd and Jacky Toruno contributed five kills each. Todd also had eight digs and a block. Toruno added two blocks and one service ace.

Freshman Emily Roderick was impressive off the bench with four kills in four attempts. The Dalton native also picked up a block. Gretchen Higdon was the assist leader with 21, while teammate Kelsey Leffew had 13 assists and three digs. Like Krsmanovic, Leffew came very close to serving out the final set as the Lady Flames picked up 12 aces over the visiting Scots and had 41 kills compared to just 20 for the losers.

Emily Stewart and Jessie Jakes had five kills apiece to lead the Covenant attack. Kristen Dahlstrand and Joanna McGill had six assists apiece for the Lady Scots.

Men's Soccer Drops Another OT Contest

Saturday, October 10, 2009

MT. BERRY, Ga. – Coach Henry Moyo described Saturday afternoon’s 1-0 overtime defeat to the host Berry College Vikings, “devastating”.

Playing under a light rain and on a muddy turf, the Lee men’s soccer team watched in disappointment as Mark Bloom picked up a long assist pass from Shane Moroney and pushed the ball past Lee keeper Luidgi Beauzile to give the rival Vikings the victory.

“We have played so well in what I term big games against No. 1 ranked Bethel, Auburn Montgomery and now Berry and have nothing to show for it,” said Moyo. “We just could not take advantage of our opportunities to win again.”

Moyo noted that his Flames had a key chance to win in the overtime period. Freshman Robby Marcum shot in the 93rd minute, hit the right side of the bar, and kicked away. Less than three minutes later, Bloom was putting the ball in the back of the net on the other end of the field to send the Flames away with another heart-breaking loss and dip their overall record to 5-6-2 on the year.

“Our kids played well,” added Moyo. “Berry probably out-played us in the first half but our guys came back strong in the second half, but again we just could not finish.”

The Berry stats show that the Vikings attempted 14 shots to seven for the Flames. They also show that Berry had four shots on goal and Lee had a pair.

Beauzile played the entire game in net and recorded three saves. For the Vikings, Ryan Edwards went all the way in the keeper position and salvaged a pair of saves.

The Flames will return to Southern States Athletic Conference action on Oct. 21st and will be hosting Brewton-Parker in a 7 p.m. match.

Women's Soccer Explodes for 8-0 Win

Thursday, October 08, 2009

Claire Lanter plays defense against Shorter

Major explosion would be an understatement in trying to describe Lee’s 8-0 women’s soccer defeat administered to the visiting Shorter College Lady Hawks on Thursday evening.

Playing before an enthusiastic home crowd, the Lady Flames scored four goals in just over eight minutes in the first half. It was almost like an automatic rifle firing shots at the visitors. The result was a 4-0 halftime advantage and allowed coach Matt Yelton to begin substituting early.
The first two scores came off the foot of talented freshman forward Emma Plewa. Jenna Achten got an assist on the first tally. Less than three minutes later, Plewa knocked in another goal. This time Christiane Christensen and Jenna Achten were credited with the double assist.

Under one minute later, senior Marina Lima got into the scoring act. Christiane Christensen registered what turned out to be her second of three straight assists. The final score of the half was recorded by Jamie Achten and Lee enjoyed the 4-0 advantage at the break.

The exciting action was far from over. Jamie Achten came right back to open the second half with a couple of quick scores. Linn Christensen claimed the assist at the 50:46 mark and Lima dished off the assist for the second tally in the 52nd minute.

Older sister, Jenna Achten got the seventh score on the second assist of the match by Linn Christensen. Freshman Darcy Brannen nailed the final goal of the night. Another freshman, Amy Cochran, gained the assist.

The win pushes the third-ranked Lee record to 8-2 on the year. They will swing right back into action on Saturday afternoon, hosting Brewton-Parker in another SSAC contest at 2 p.m.
"We will finish off a long week on Saturday,” said Yelton. “I think it is really important for us to carry this quality into the weekend."

“I am really pleased with how our girls have played recently and the intensity we are bringing to matches,” said Yelton. “It has been fun to watch our team play these last few games. I just hope we can continue to play at this level and even raise the standard as the season progresses."

"I think our front three in Jamie (Achten), Emma (Plewa) and Chris (Christensen) are absolutely en sync right now and they are all so individually dangerous,” added Yelton. “You can't focus on one of them, but they are playing absolutely great soccer in combination with each other."

Yelton again praised the effort of his defense. "It was good to get another shutout tonight and I am really happy with the fact that we are defending very well as a group. We are limiting the chances that we are giving the opposition."

Volleyball Wins Easily Over Berry

Thursday, October 08, 2009

MT. BERRY, Ga. – The Lee volleyball team rang up its ninth straight victory on Thursday evening and ran its record to 17-4 in an overwhelming 3-0 (25-11, 25-18, 25-11) win over former SSAC rival Berry College.

Coach Andrea Hudson used 16 players in the romp as she prepared her Lady Flames for Covenant College on Saturday at 3 p.m. and then a huge challenge from NCAA Division III power Emory University later in the evening (7p.m.).

Lee dominated play at the net with sophomore Stephanie Todd recording 13 kills. She then moved into the back court and came away with 11 digs. Milica Krsmanovic had her usual fine game with nine kills, three digs and seven aces. According to assistant coach Kevin Hudson, Milica ran off 11 straight service points in the opening set.

Vedrana Krsmanovic countered with nine kills and a pair of blocks. Gorana Maric came up large in the victory. She had nine kills in 10 attempts for a .900 attack percentage. Kayla Carlisle contributed four blocks and Gretchen Higdon added 11 assists and three aces. Kelsey Leffew chipped in with seven assists, while Jacky Toruno came away with nine digs.

Berry got seven kills from Claire Scott, while Erin Godwin kicked in with seven assists. Kristin Hargrove was the dig leader with eight and Allison Lewen totaled seven.

Basketball Tip-Off Planned for Friday

Wednesday, October 07, 2009

With the 2009-10 basketball season scheduled to begin on Nov. 2, the Lee Flames will give its fans a sneak preview of what’s to come on Friday (Oct. 9) at 6 p.m.

The action-packed event is called “Above the Rim” and features something for every basketball fan. The Flames will be divided for an inter-squad game to begin the “100-Minute Evening”. With the depth that coach Tommy Brown has assembled for this team, it should be a highly entertaining contest.

A slam-dunk contest is always a highlight of any showcase and high-jump champion Larrques Cunningham could bring something special to the competition.

In the finale, several of the former Flames will be returning to challenge the current Lee squad. Ex-Flames Brad Harris, Elmar Kuli-Zade and Cole Rose will headline those returning. They promise to give Brown’s squad a run for their money. Harris, a former Lee All-American, will be autographing one of his jerseys and giving it to a lucky fan after the game.

The 2009-10 Lady Flames’ basketball team will also be introduced. After the excitement has died down, the Flames plan a dinner for the former players who would like to attend.

Men's Soccer Wins Defensive Struggle

Tuesday, October 06, 2009

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - The Lee men's soccer team used a strong defensive effort again on Tuesday afternoon and came away with a 1-0 victory over Emmanuel College in a Southern States Athletic Conference battle.

The win over the Lions was the second straight victory for coach Henry Moyo's team and evened their record at 5-5-2. The Flames will continue their road adventures on Saturday, facing an even tougher test against former SSAC rival Berry College at 1 p.m.

After a scoreless first half, the Flames finally broke the scoring ice midway of the second 45 minutes. "A defender came to the rescue again," said Moyo. The coach was referring to the play of Chris Hennessey and Luidgi Beauzile in last week's win over Faulkner.

This time, it was freshman defender Cedric Beauzile who scored his second goal of the season to give Lee all the cushion it needed. "Overall, we played very well and got several scoring opportunities, but again we could not finish. We moved the ball very well against a physical Emmanuel team," noted Moyo. "They came out with a little more fire than us to begin the second half. We got things settled down and were pretty much in control all the way."

Moyo stressed that his younger player gained more road experience. "(Freshman) Sias (Reyneke) got a couple of scoring opportunities and did a good job for us again. Curtis (Alcide) played well and our back four defenders turned in solid efforts. We were playing without Chris (Hennessey) who was injured against Faulkner and did not make the trip, but our other defenders took up the slack."

Women's Soccer Shuts Out Emmanuel

Tuesday, October 06, 2009
FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - Senior Marina Lima and freshman Emma Plewa scored two goals apiece and coach Matt Yelton used 22 players as his third-ranked Lee women's soccer team coasted to a 5-0 victory over Emmanuel on Tuesday afternoon.

"I was really pleased with the way our girls performed at a tough place to play," said Yelton after his club improved to 7-2 on the year and remained unbeaten in Southern States Athletic Conference play. The long week continues for the Lady Flames on Thursday as they return to the Lee Soccer Field to host Shorter College in a key conference matchup. They will play their third game of the week on Saturday when Brewton-Parker comes calling for a 2 p.m. affair.

The Lady Flames put the game away in the first 15 minutes with a pair of scores. They built up a 4-0 advantage by halftime and never looked back. Plewa scored first on an assist by Lima, who finished the afternoon with two assists to go along with her two goals. Lima scored next and was assisted by Chris Christensen.

After Lima scored again on another assist by Christensen to make it 3-0, Christensen tallied the next goal and it was 4-0 at the break. Christensen opened the second 45 minutes with a score and got an assist from Jamie Achten. Plewa wrapped up the match with a goal. The double assist came from Jamie Achten and Lima.

"Emmanuel played both Auburn Montgomery and Brenau close here," said Yelton. "I think that's a pretty good example of how we played. We expect Shorter to bring a stronger challenge to our place on Thursday."

Lee fired away at will in the victory, taking 28 shots and 15 were on target. Emmanuel was only able to take four shots and had one on goal. Leah Wilson and Leigha Terry split time at the goal-keeping position for the Lady Flames.

Men's Golf Wins Berry Tournament

Tuesday, October 06, 2009

ROME, Ga. - Very seldom is the word team used when talking about the sport of golf, but that was certainly the case as the Lee men's golf team took first place in the Chick-fil-A Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Berry College.

No Flame finished higher than 13th in the individual competition, but all five of coach John Maupin's players were consistent as the young Lee team claimed its second victory in three starts this fall. Sam Bedwell and Taylor Huse tied for the 13th spot. Each fired 1-under par 143s in the 36-hole event that was played at the Coosa Country Club.

Shorter College's Arvid Bengtsson blistered the water-logged Coosa course with 72-65 -137 and carted home medalist honors.

Bedwell, the only junior on the Lee squad, had a 72 on Monday and came back with a 71 on Tuesday afternoon. Huse did the opposite. The sophomore tallied a 71 on Monday and a 72 Tuesday. Overall, the Flames posted a 576 total. They were even-par each day with rounds of 288.

Sophomore Caleb Roberson was one stroke back of Bedwell and Huse with a 71-73 - 144. He placed 16th. Jeremy Lawson was next with a 74-72 - 146, while Tyler Smith was consistent with a 74 each day and a 148 finish.

The Flames edged out Thomas University (Ga.), the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.), and William Carey (Miss.) by one stroke to claim the first-place trophy. The three challengers finished at 577.

"This was not your normal tournament," said Maupin, who played on this same course as a member of the Berry squad two years ago. "It's pretty big for us to win this tournament against excellent competition and it was certainly a team effort. We were very consistent both days and our guys were very excited."

In fact, the Flames and their coach waited anxiously for the final foursome to finish. "Honestly, we left some shots out there again on the final four holes and probably made it a little closer than it should have been," the coach noted. "The tournament came down to the final putt on the final hole."

The young Flames will return to the links next week and face even tougher competition when they travel to Illinois and play on the TPC Deere Run course.

Linn Christensen is SSAC Player of the Week

Linn Christensen, an outstanding midfielder for the Lee women's soccer team over the past two season, has been selected as the SSAC Defensive Player of the Week.

The 5-foot-3 senior from Oslo, Norway has teamed with her twin sister Chris to help direct the Lady Flames to a national title last season and a No. 3 ranking this year. Lee stands at 6-2 on the year and last week posted SSAC wins over Auburn Montgomery 2-0) and Faulkner University (6-0).

Coach Matt Yelton pointed out that Linn was a key figure defensively in Lee's victory over AUM, breaking up several of the Lady Senators' opportunities in the attack. In the win over Faulkner, Christensen registered a goal and an assist to go along with her superior defensive play.

The Lady Flames will be back in conference action on Tuesday afternoon, traveling to Emmanuel College for a 3 p.m. match. Lee returns home on Thursday and hosts Shorter College and closes out the busy week by hosting Brewton-Parker College on Saturday.

Golfers Open with 288 at Coosa

Monday, October 05, 2009

ROME, Ga. – A pair of sophomores stepped up to pace the Lee men’s golf team in the opening round of the Chick-fil-A Collegiate Invitational being hosted by Berry College at the Coosa Country Club.

Caleb Roberson and Taylor Huse each fired a 1-under par 71 under cold and damp conditions on a Monday that saw the start delayed for over four hours. Junior Sam Bedwell posted an even par 72, while freshmen Tyler Smith and sophomore Jeremy Lawson came in at 74.
“We posted a good range of scores, but we still left some shots on the course,” said coach John Maupin. “We needed to finish stronger on the last four holes – that’s where we struggled at times.”

Lee’s 288 was topped by three other colleges in the 19-team field. The University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) holds down first place after recording an impressive 7-under par 281. William Carey (Miss.) followed at 282 and Thomas University (Ga.) rounded out the first three at 287.

Four individuals, Sam Curtis (Berry), Joshua Ivy (Southern Wesleyan), Matt Hungerman (Williams Carey) and Patrick Lovely (Thomas University) are deadlocked for medalist honors with 4-under par 68s. In fact the scoring was so good that you had to go all the way down the leader board to find Roberson and Huse tied with six other golfers for 16th.

Volleyball Runs Winning Streak to Nine

Monday, October 05, 2009

ROME, Ga. – The Lee volleyball team was forced to battle from behind in posting a 3-1 Southern States Athletic Conference victory over Shorter College on Monday evening.

The host Lady Hawks won the opening set 25-27. “They played lights-out volleyball in the first game,” said assistant coach Kevin Hudson.

Lee rebounded to claim the final three sets 25-14, 25-19, 25-16. Hudson admitted that the final three-game scores were somewhat deceiving. “They contested every point,” he noted. “We didn’t have a single ace the entire night and I can’t ever remember that happening before. Shorter played us very well.”

It was the ninth straight victory for the Lady Flames who are now 16-4 on the year. They also remain unbeaten in SSAC play. Lee will return to the Rome, Ga. area on Thursday and battle another rival in Berry College.

Sophomore Christa Hutchison played what Hudson described as probably the best volleyball of her young career. She finished the night with 15 kills and a .419 hitting percentage. Milica Krsmanovic and Stephanie Todd followed closely behind with 14 slams apiece as the Lady Flames registered .239 hitting percentage to just .033 for Shorter. The Lady Flames had 62 kills to 32 for the losers.

Gretchen Higdon and Kelsey Leffew each dished off 24 assists and Sara Smith came up with 22 digs. Jacky Toruno led the Lady Flames in blocks with four and Kayla Carlisle added three.

Seniors Help Lee Past Faulkner

Saturday, October 03, 2009

Story by; George Starr - Sports Information

Coach Henry Moyo called on his seniors to help his Lee men’s soccer team gain a 2-1 SSAC victory over visiting Faulkner University on Saturday afternoon.

After a scoreless first half, defender Chris Hennessey tallied his team-leading third goal of the season on a free kick. The score came in the 67th minute and stood up until a senior teammate made his first ever appearance at forward. Luidgi Beauzile responded with a well-placed ball to freshman Robby Marcum, who delivered his first career goal.

The final goal turned out to be huge for the Flames, who broke a two-game losing skid and captured their first SSAC win of the season. Faulkner’s Joseph Stover made things interesting by scoring in the 89th minute. Lee improved the 4-5-2 on the year and 1-3 in league play. The Eagles are 4-5 overall and winless in conference action.

Moyo said Beauzile had been training at forward at different points over the past two years. Before the match, the coach told another senior, Michael Simmons, that he would be starting at the keeper position. Simmons had played in only one game since his sophomore year, but was willing to wait on another opportunity. He finished the win with six saves as Faulkner had seven shots on goal.

“Coach Moyo told me during the pre-game meal that I would be starting,” said Simmons. “My dad had not seen me play in two years. It was great that he decided to come to this game.”
On the other hand, Moyo said he told Luidgi, a candidate for All-American goalkeeper, that he was just going to give him some rest. “I finally told him at halftime to go find himself a jersey,” laughed Moyo. “His eyes lit up. I wanted to see what he could help us create. He gives us speed up front and had a couple of scoring opportunities before the assist.”

Beauzile wasn’t the only happy Flame. “I’ll never forget my first college goal,” said Marcum with a big smile spread across his face.

Moyo admitted that his young team had been searching for ways to put the ball in the back of the net. “We’ve had to put young players in there and let them learn the game the hard way,” he stressed. “At times it seems like too much pressure on these guys, but they are gaining confidence.”

The Flames will jump right back into SSAC action on Tuesday, traveling to Emmanuel College for a 7 p.m. start. Lee opponents will have a little something extra to think about. Will Beauzile be in goal or flying up and down the pitch? Will Simmons be starting his second straight contest, and will Marcum and Hennessey set the scoring pace for the Flames?

Stay tuned.

Men's Soccer Beaten at Southern Wesleyan

Story by; George Starr - Sports Information

Thursday, October 01, 2009

CENTRAL, S.C. - Lee men's soccer coach Henry Moyo was deeply upset after his Flames dropped an SSAC contest to Southern Wesleyan University on Thursday evening by a 1-0 margin.

"It was one of my team's worst performances ever," stressed Moyo. "I'm really frustrated with my team at the present time. We came out acting like superstars and didn't put forth the effort it took to beat Southern Wesleyan. My hat is off to them. They shut us down and, in the first half, they put on a soccer clinic."

The two clubs, battling to stay in the conference hunt, were deadlocked at zero after the first 45 minutes. Seven minutes deep into the second half, Carlos Silver scored on an assist from Henry Villa Franco and that's all the Warriors needed in posting the key victory.

"We played like we were on vacation instead of a team fighting to stay in the conference race," admitted Moyo. "Overall the conference is getting stronger. Everyone knows who we are after we won the championship last year. They always put forth their best effort against us. We've got a lot of work ahead of us and hopefully, we can play better on Saturday afternoon."

Southern Wesleyan out shot the Flames 10-9. Lee's Luidgi Beauzile was credited with four saves. The defeat drops Lee to 3-5-2 overall but the Flames remain winless in the SSAC, 0-3. Southern Wesleyan is now 1-0-1 in conference play and 3-2-2 overall.

Tuesday, September 29, 2009

The Lee volleyball team scored its seventh straight win and improved to 14-4 overall by defeating SSAC opponent Brenau University, 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-18) on Tuesday evening in Walker Arena.

"I challenged our girls to stay motivated, and they did," said coach Andrea Hudson. The Lady Flames helped their coach celebrate her 600th college volleyball coaching win last Saturday, and Hudson stressed that she wanted her team to play with the same motivation in every match.

"Even our reserves played at the same level," Hudson pointed out. Her Lady Flames face three road matches before returning to Walker Arena for contests with Covenant College and Emory University on Oct. 10.

Milica Krsmanovic again stepped up to lead the Lady Flames. The senior had eight kills (.583 attack percentage) and seven aces. Jacky Toruno and Kayla Carlisle added seven slams apiece. All totaled Lee had 40 kills to just 16 for the losers. Toruno also had a pair of blocks as did Vedrana Krsmanovic.

Sara Smith came up with seven digs and three aces. Stephanie Todd was the dig leader while Gretchen Higdon added five. Higdon dished off 16 assists and Kelsey Leffew contributed eight. Gorana Maric did good work at the net with three blocks.

Audra Van Arsdale paced the losers with 16 assists. Courtney Frady joined in with eight digs and Karen Green was the kill leader with seven.

Lady Flames Blast Faulkner, 6-0

Story by; George Starr - Sports Information

Thursday, October 01, 2009

Lee University, the defending NAIA national champions, returned to their old form on Thursday evening and pinned a convincing 6-0 defeat on SSAC foe Faulkner University.

The host Lady Flames were in command all the way, scoring three goals in each half. Coach Matt Yelton substituted freely in the second 45 minutes. Before the 90 minutes ticked away, five different Lee players scored goals.

“It was good to see how our team responded to tonight’s challenge," said Yelton. "We talked a lot about playing with the right type of enthusiasm and I believe we came ready to play tonight as we have all year. That is something we now need to continue on into the remaining weeks of the regular season and the post season.”

Sophomore Jamie Achten tallied the first of her two goals in the first nine minutes of play. The score was set up on a well executed double assist from Linn Christensen, who served the ball into the box. Jenna Achten deflected the pass with a header and sister Jamie kicked it into the left side of the net.

The margin grew to 2-0 in the 23rd minute. Freshman standout Emma Plewa picked up an assist from Jamie Achten and powered the ball into the back of the net. In the 38th minute, Jamie Achten scored her final goal of the evening. On the play, Plewa returned an earlier favor by placing a well played ball to Achten for the tally.

Kim Conrad claimed Lee's fourth score on an unassisted goal in the 56th minute. Senior Savannah Neely stepped up and claimed the fifth tally and Chris Christensen was credited with the assist. The final goal of the evening came in the 58th minute as the Lady Flames scored three tallies in just over two minutes. Linn Christensen knocked in the goal while Jamie Achten registered her second assist to go along with two goals.

“I was really pleased with how well we attacked," pointed out Yelton. "I thought our combination play up front was fantastic and all of our forwards seemed to be in sync with each other.”

“(Marina) Lima, (Jenna) Achten and Conrad were fantastic in midfield and did a great job of controlling the midfield and putting good service into our front runners.”

“It was also another good performance from our back line tonight," added Yelton. "We were able to limit Faulkner’s opportunities, and then create opportunities going forward once we won the ball. We haven’t conceded many goals this year. If we can continue to do the right things defensively, we are going to have an opportunity to win a lot of games this year.”

The 6-2 and third-ranked Lady Flames will enjoy the rest of the weekend off, but next week is another story. Yelton's team will face three key SSAC teams that begins at Emmanuel on Tuesday. Lee hosts Shorter on Thursday and ends a long week by entertaining Brewton-Parker one week from Saturday.

AUM Defeats Flames in 2OT, 2-1

Josh Inglis Fights for Loose Ball Against AUM

Story by; George Starr - Sports Information

Tuesday, September 29, 2009

The Lee University Flames (3-4-2, 0-2) had the 16th ranked Auburn-Montgomery Senators (6-1-2, 3-0) on the ropes Tuesday night, despite playing a man down for the entire second half and in double overtime.

Demaro Jones was sent off with just 1:38 remaining in the opening half, receiving his second yellow card of the match for a hard tackle near midfield.

“That was a tough blow,” said Flames assistant coach Thuba Nkomazana who handled the sideline duties in place of head coach Henry Moyo who was battling a cold bug. “It could have really hurt us, but instead of backing down, we responded.”

The teams went to the halftime break in a scoreless tie, and during the intermission, the coach staff gave their guys some key instructions. “We told them at halftime that being down a man, we were really going to have to be disciplined in our positioning and formation,” Nkomazana said, “The guys did a good job with that in the second half.”

AUM broke the deadlock in the 59th minute when Stefan Arnarson fired a shot past Flames’ keeper Luidgi Beauzile on a penalty kick to make it 1-0 Senators.

The Lee side kept fighting back. Moments later, Beauzile made a diving save to keep the deficit at a single goal, and the Flames capitalized on the momentum shift.

Just 13 minutes after the Senators had claimed the edge, Curtis Alcide served one into the box from the right wing, and senior captain Chris Hennessey used a single touch to chip the ball over AUM keeper Kile Kennedy to tie the match at 1-1.

The goal was the Flames’ first at home since opening night against Truett-McConnell College in a match the Flames won 3-0.

“The leadership from guys like Chris [Hennessey] and Luidgi [Beauzile] really showed through tonight,” remarked Nkomazana, “Those guys showed their dedication by not just talking like leaders, but by acting like leaders.”

In overtime, the Flames had a golden opportunity early, but a shot by Mohamad Aden was blocked, and the first overtime session went by scoreless.

Just over four minutes into the second overtime, it was over. Beauzile made a great save on a point-blank chance from Arnarson, but Yuki Kariya lobbed the rebound over Beauzile and into the net for the game-winner.

“Overall I thought we played well tonight,” Nkomazana said. “We gave good effort. We just got a little unlucky on the last goal.”

The Flames will hit the road Thursday to take on the Warriors of Southern Wesleyan University (2-2-2, 0-0-1) in Central, S.C.

Women's Soccer Out Defends AUM, 2-0

Jamie Achten Battles for Lady Flames

Story by; George Starr - Sports Information

Tuesday, September 29, 2009

Fresh off a goal some 10 days ago in a World Cup match for Wales, Emma Plewa returned to the Lee campus and broke free of Auburn Montgomery keeper Daisy Burnfield in the 67th minute to propel the Lady Flames to a hard earned 2-0 win.

After being rained out last weekend, Lee (5-2, 1-0) finally was able to play its first Southern States Athletic Conference match of the season. The visiting Lady Senators (6-3, 2-2) fought Matt Yelton’s fourth-ranked team the entire 90 minutes on a near-perfect evening for soccer.
In fact, senior Marina Lima scored just before the final horn sounded to give the Lady Flames the 2-0 edge. Lima's shot, just inside the left corner, hooked around the AUM keeper and into the right side of the net.

Plewa’s earlier goal was assisted by Kim Conrad. Burnfield came out to challenge the talented freshman forward and lost her footing as Plewa powered ahead at full speed.
Only 20 shots were attempted in the defensive struggle. Lee's third-ranked club put eight shots on target and AUM had four shots on goal. Burnfield was credited with six saves and Lee freshman keeper Leah Wilson had four saves – one coming late in the second half.
“First and foremost my hat is off to AUM,” said Yelton. “They are a much improved side and it is probably their best team since the 2004 season. They gave a great effort tonight and I think have a very bright season in front of them.”

On the other hand, Yelton said, “I thought we did some good things tonight at times. We played some decent balls into space, our service was good, and we combined well out of midfield. But the final product was missing and we have to learn to be hungrier to score goals.”
The Lee coach pointed out that he thought his club had some really good individual performances. “I thought Emma (Plewa) was at the best she has been so far this season. Kim (Conrad) has worked her socks off in midfield since she got here and had another strong performance tonight.”

Yelton added, “I felt like our back four were good again tonight and we put together another shutout and that’s another positive to take out of the evening.”

“However,” he stressed, the SSAC is a lot better this year, and we need to make sure that we aren’t taking the success we have had the last several years for granted.”

For the record, it was Lee’s 45th straight victory in conference play, dating back to the TranSouth Conference days. The Lady Flames will return to action on Thursday and host Faulkner University in a SSAC match slated for 7 p.m.

Welcome To My LEE Sports Blog

Am I becoming one of those people?
(Don’t answer that.)

I now have…two…blogs.

The new blog is called “Lee Sports Photos”, and it’s a photoblog I’m doing as part of my job over with Lee University. I was fortunate that my previous blog at Vision Studios Photography was read by the Lee University folks, and when they brought me on board one of the things they wanted me to establish was a similar presence.

“Lee Sports Photos” will, of course, be solely focused on the Lee Flames. I hope to share behind-the-scenes images as well as game photos.

Thanks
