Claire Lanter plays defense against Shorter

Major explosion would be an understatement in trying to describe Lee’s 8-0 women’s soccer defeat administered to the visiting Shorter College Lady Hawks on Thursday evening.

Playing before an enthusiastic home crowd, the Lady Flames scored four goals in just over eight minutes in the first half. It was almost like an automatic rifle firing shots at the visitors. The result was a 4-0 halftime advantage and allowed coach Matt Yelton to begin substituting early.
The first two scores came off the foot of talented freshman forward Emma Plewa. Jenna Achten got an assist on the first tally. Less than three minutes later, Plewa knocked in another goal. This time Christiane Christensen and Jenna Achten were credited with the double assist.

Under one minute later, senior Marina Lima got into the scoring act. Christiane Christensen registered what turned out to be her second of three straight assists. The final score of the half was recorded by Jamie Achten and Lee enjoyed the 4-0 advantage at the break.

The exciting action was far from over. Jamie Achten came right back to open the second half with a couple of quick scores. Linn Christensen claimed the assist at the 50:46 mark and Lima dished off the assist for the second tally in the 52nd minute.

Older sister, Jenna Achten got the seventh score on the second assist of the match by Linn Christensen. Freshman Darcy Brannen nailed the final goal of the night. Another freshman, Amy Cochran, gained the assist.

The win pushes the third-ranked Lee record to 8-2 on the year. They will swing right back into action on Saturday afternoon, hosting Brewton-Parker in another SSAC contest at 2 p.m.
"We will finish off a long week on Saturday,” said Yelton. “I think it is really important for us to carry this quality into the weekend."

“I am really pleased with how our girls have played recently and the intensity we are bringing to matches,” said Yelton. “It has been fun to watch our team play these last few games. I just hope we can continue to play at this level and even raise the standard as the season progresses."

"I think our front three in Jamie (Achten), Emma (Plewa) and Chris (Christensen) are absolutely en sync right now and they are all so individually dangerous,” added Yelton. “You can't focus on one of them, but they are playing absolutely great soccer in combination with each other."

Yelton again praised the effort of his defense. "It was good to get another shutout tonight and I am really happy with the fact that we are defending very well as a group. We are limiting the chances that we are giving the opposition."
