Men's Soccer Wins Defensive Struggle

Tuesday, October 06, 2009

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - The Lee men's soccer team used a strong defensive effort again on Tuesday afternoon and came away with a 1-0 victory over Emmanuel College in a Southern States Athletic Conference battle.

The win over the Lions was the second straight victory for coach Henry Moyo's team and evened their record at 5-5-2. The Flames will continue their road adventures on Saturday, facing an even tougher test against former SSAC rival Berry College at 1 p.m.

After a scoreless first half, the Flames finally broke the scoring ice midway of the second 45 minutes. "A defender came to the rescue again," said Moyo. The coach was referring to the play of Chris Hennessey and Luidgi Beauzile in last week's win over Faulkner.

This time, it was freshman defender Cedric Beauzile who scored his second goal of the season to give Lee all the cushion it needed. "Overall, we played very well and got several scoring opportunities, but again we could not finish. We moved the ball very well against a physical Emmanuel team," noted Moyo. "They came out with a little more fire than us to begin the second half. We got things settled down and were pretty much in control all the way."

Moyo stressed that his younger player gained more road experience. "(Freshman) Sias (Reyneke) got a couple of scoring opportunities and did a good job for us again. Curtis (Alcide) played well and our back four defenders turned in solid efforts. We were playing without Chris (Hennessey) who was injured against Faulkner and did not make the trip, but our other defenders took up the slack."
