Volleyball Runs Winning Streak to Nine

Monday, October 05, 2009

ROME, Ga. – The Lee volleyball team was forced to battle from behind in posting a 3-1 Southern States Athletic Conference victory over Shorter College on Monday evening.

The host Lady Hawks won the opening set 25-27. “They played lights-out volleyball in the first game,” said assistant coach Kevin Hudson.

Lee rebounded to claim the final three sets 25-14, 25-19, 25-16. Hudson admitted that the final three-game scores were somewhat deceiving. “They contested every point,” he noted. “We didn’t have a single ace the entire night and I can’t ever remember that happening before. Shorter played us very well.”

It was the ninth straight victory for the Lady Flames who are now 16-4 on the year. They also remain unbeaten in SSAC play. Lee will return to the Rome, Ga. area on Thursday and battle another rival in Berry College.

Sophomore Christa Hutchison played what Hudson described as probably the best volleyball of her young career. She finished the night with 15 kills and a .419 hitting percentage. Milica Krsmanovic and Stephanie Todd followed closely behind with 14 slams apiece as the Lady Flames registered .239 hitting percentage to just .033 for Shorter. The Lady Flames had 62 kills to 32 for the losers.

Gretchen Higdon and Kelsey Leffew each dished off 24 assists and Sara Smith came up with 22 digs. Jacky Toruno led the Lady Flames in blocks with four and Kayla Carlisle added three.
