Golfers Open with 288 at Coosa

Monday, October 05, 2009

ROME, Ga. – A pair of sophomores stepped up to pace the Lee men’s golf team in the opening round of the Chick-fil-A Collegiate Invitational being hosted by Berry College at the Coosa Country Club.

Caleb Roberson and Taylor Huse each fired a 1-under par 71 under cold and damp conditions on a Monday that saw the start delayed for over four hours. Junior Sam Bedwell posted an even par 72, while freshmen Tyler Smith and sophomore Jeremy Lawson came in at 74.
“We posted a good range of scores, but we still left some shots on the course,” said coach John Maupin. “We needed to finish stronger on the last four holes – that’s where we struggled at times.”

Lee’s 288 was topped by three other colleges in the 19-team field. The University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) holds down first place after recording an impressive 7-under par 281. William Carey (Miss.) followed at 282 and Thomas University (Ga.) rounded out the first three at 287.

Four individuals, Sam Curtis (Berry), Joshua Ivy (Southern Wesleyan), Matt Hungerman (Williams Carey) and Patrick Lovely (Thomas University) are deadlocked for medalist honors with 4-under par 68s. In fact the scoring was so good that you had to go all the way down the leader board to find Roberson and Huse tied with six other golfers for 16th.
