VB winning streak reaches 17

Tuesday, October 20, 2009

Coach Andrea Hudson will be the first to admit that Tuesday's 3-1 volleyball victory over visiting Trevecca Nazarene University was far from being one of her team's best, but it increased Lee's winning streak to 17 and sets up a key match with Emory University in Atlanta on Thursday.

The Lady Flames celebrated a return to the NAIA Top 25 ranking for the first time since September of 2007 by winning the first set by a convincing 25-9 margin. However, like they have on several occasions this season, Lee apparently lost its focus in the second set and was pinned with a 23-25 loss. Hudson rebounded her troops in style in the third set with a 25-17 decision, and the final set was also no contest as Lee won going away, 25-16.

The 24-4 Lady Flames, who have not lost since Sept 18, were led by Christa Hutchison. The sophomore outside hitter had 14 kills and an attack percentage of .444. She also added three blocks and five digs. Milica Krsmanovic had 12 kills in 22 attempts (.409). She served up two aces and pitched in with two blocks.

Sophomore outside hitter Stephanie Todd followed with nine kills, two aces, 16 digs and two blocks. Jacky Toruno made her presence felt with eight kills, five blocks and three digs. Gretchen Higdon set up her teammates with 22 assists and also joined in with 12 digs. Kelsey Leffew was next with 19 assists. Leffew joined Higdon with a double-figure night when she came up with 10 digs.

Trevecca had only one player with double-figure kills. Teegan Hunzlker slammed 10. She also kicked in with 13 digs. Haley White placed the Lady Trojans with 18 digs. Brooke Cannon added 15 assists and Halley Wiggins had 11.
