Lee University, the defending NAIA national champions, returned to their old form on Thursday evening and pinned a convincing 6-0 defeat on SSAC foe Faulkner University.

The host Lady Flames were in command all the way, scoring three goals in each half. Coach Matt Yelton substituted freely in the second 45 minutes. Before the 90 minutes ticked away, five different Lee players scored goals.

“It was good to see how our team responded to tonight’s challenge," said Yelton. "We talked a lot about playing with the right type of enthusiasm and I believe we came ready to play tonight as we have all year. That is something we now need to continue on into the remaining weeks of the regular season and the post season.”

Sophomore Jamie Achten tallied the first of her two goals in the first nine minutes of play. The score was set up on a well executed double assist from Linn Christensen, who served the ball into the box. Jenna Achten deflected the pass with a header and sister Jamie kicked it into the left side of the net.

The margin grew to 2-0 in the 23rd minute. Freshman standout Emma Plewa picked up an assist from Jamie Achten and powered the ball into the back of the net. In the 38th minute, Jamie Achten scored her final goal of the evening. On the play, Plewa returned an earlier favor by placing a well played ball to Achten for the tally.

Kim Conrad claimed Lee's fourth score on an unassisted goal in the 56th minute. Senior Savannah Neely stepped up and claimed the fifth tally and Chris Christensen was credited with the assist. The final goal of the evening came in the 58th minute as the Lady Flames scored three tallies in just over two minutes. Linn Christensen knocked in the goal while Jamie Achten registered her second assist to go along with two goals.

“I was really pleased with how well we attacked," pointed out Yelton. "I thought our combination play up front was fantastic and all of our forwards seemed to be in sync with each other.”

“(Marina) Lima, (Jenna) Achten and Conrad were fantastic in midfield and did a great job of controlling the midfield and putting good service into our front runners.”

“It was also another good performance from our back line tonight," added Yelton. "We were able to limit Faulkner’s opportunities, and then create opportunities going forward once we won the ball. We haven’t conceded many goals this year. If we can continue to do the right things defensively, we are going to have an opportunity to win a lot of games this year.”

The 6-2 and third-ranked Lady Flames will enjoy the rest of the weekend off, but next week is another story. Yelton's team will face three key SSAC teams that begins at Emmanuel on Tuesday. Lee hosts Shorter on Thursday and ends a long week by entertaining Brewton-Parker one week from Saturday.
